| So, in ACLA, we read TKAM. During our time reading it, we had to write a "graveyard narrative", which is like when you write as a made up dead person and stuff like that. We had to choose someone from the Finch, Ewel, or Robinson family. I chose the Finches. This is my writing piece:
Mollie Kate S 5/16/08 Graveyard Narr. LA 8
Delilah Carson Finch 1862-1888 Never one to follow the flow of the river
Oh. Lordy. No. If I’m correct, since you are reading this… I surely must be gone to the good father above. Well, this sure puts a damper on things. Here I was, about to explain my past when I find out… Oh, I’m dead. Okay, enough with the babbling. Let me start with the year I was born, 1862.
1862 is a time I barely remember. All I know is that President Lincoln presented the Emancipation Proclamation, I was born, and something about the freedmen’s bureau. One thing in particular that I can recall is that I was attacked by a vicious hound, and was left scarred for life. Both mentally and physically. The doctors gave up hope, but my little almost-1-year-old body and mind fought hard and came out on top. Ever since then I was treated like a darn old porcelain doll. How I wished that my mom could realize that I wouldn’t break just because of a hug.
Later on down the road came the “famous” carpetbaggers. They were a nuisance, and had very poor taste in fabric designs, or so said my mother on various occasions. The main, and most hated, memory I have of those years would be when I saw a lynching that took place near our home. The “criminal” was only 13 years old, and couldn’t have been more terrified than if a grizzly bear was chasing him. A junior form of the Ku Klux Klan decided it would be fun to “Teach the n…(I can’t even think, let alone say or write, the word because I despise it so) a lesson.” Personally, I don’t think they truly meant to kill the poor boy. That still doesn’t explain the fact that they got off with no punishment at all, not even a spanking!
Lastly, I remember what happened right before I died. I was on my way home from visiting one of my friends at their house. Stupidly I decided to walk back to my house alone. A little bit after leaving the friends house, I heard someone following me. When I turned around, no one was there. So, I kept on walking. Suddenly, I heard whoever (or whatever) it was behind me again. This made me nervous, and I began running. My shoes were not made for such rigorous use, and they quickly broke. After that, I fell, and lost consciousness. When I woke up, I was here, in heaven.
I don’t think I will ever know what happened, though I have a few ideas. Hopefully my family found my body. I know they need such closure. Also, when I find who did this to me, they better be prepared. Even though I am, well… was, a girl I knew/know how to punch the daylights out of even the strongest man. Though, I don’t know how that could help me, since I’m dead and all. Anyways, let this be known. I will find who killed me, and when I do, they will wish they never committed such a crime.
the ending might seem a bit familiar. I didn't notice it was sliiightly like Rosalie's story until after I wrote it. Anyways, please tell me what you think!
