My parents died on impact, this was obvious, but I wasn’t sure about myself. I didn’t know if I was dead or alive. The SUV pushed our car to the woods on the other side. I was certainly injured but I wasn’t sure if the Hummer had killed me.
“He’ll be able to take it,” I heard a whisper say.
“The medics will be here soon,” another voice whispered, certainly worried.
“Like I said, if he survived that crash, he can take three days of change….”
“Why would he want to live while his parents died? He’d be miserable.”
“Eleanor, trust me on this one.”
The car door beside me opened reluctantly, a stern face stared at me while I looked over in fear.
“You’re going to be okay,” he said. The wind from the moving cars rustled his black hair while his black eyes decided on how to get me out of the car. He moved so quickly, everything was blurred as he removed protruding objects and pulled me out of the wreckage. He cradled me as he ran thru the woods to a secluded place. There, a woman with red hair, pale skin, and black eyes was waiting. Her expression showed that she knew what was coming.
The man with black hair set me on the ground. The woman put my head on her lap and tried to help the wounds I had.
“I’ll be right here the whole time,” she whispered to me, matching one of the voices I heard earlier. The man with the black hair came over to us.
“My name is Luke. If you need anything at all, just tell me, okay?” I just nodded my understanding.
He took my arm, made a small face of disgust, and sank his teeth into my arm. His teeth were a needle to the thread of pain that followed.

Even though his face came away from my arm to look at my reaction, the needle went all the way into my arm. The thread following, expanding and unraveling to the rest of my limb. The needle rushed through my arm but it felt like an hour before it stopped moving. The thread choked my voice. It was getting harder to breathe, but I couldn’t stop screaming. The pain made me regret life, made me regret love. Everything that I’ve experienced, every love I’ve had flashed before my eyes. The pain I’ve experienced, I experienced again but never surpassed the pain of the thread.
My screams echoed off the trees. Eleanor stroked my hair while Luke ran off to a nearby stream.
“Hun, what’s you name?” she whispered, obviously trying to get my mind off the pain.
“Tom,” I said through rounds of screams.
“Tom, what’s your full name?” she asked nicely.
More screams followed. The pain never went away. The scream never amounted to how much pain I felt. Eventually I could talk between screams.
“Thomas….AH!.... Ian…Salamen,” I said’ not able to contain a scream or two.
“Thank you, Tom. I wish I could help with the pain but I can’t,” she said regretfully.
“What’s hap-“ I released another scream. “What’s happening?” I said quickly. It was getting harder to breathe still.
“You’re turning into one of us,” a stern voice said beside me. I looked over to see Luke standing to the right of us, coming out of the woods. “You were going to die. You are being reborn.”
As soon as he said “born”, the thread that had spread through my whole body turned to fire. With every pulse of my heart, the fire got hotter and more intense. The thing that kept me alive was harming me, making me hate it. The fire was burning everything inside me.
