PostSubject: The Cover   Fri 18 Jan 2008 - 17:09

What do you think the cover symoblizes?

The cover of twilight with the apple in the hands. In my opinion the apple represents Bella as the 'forbidden fruit'. The quote in the front of the book is from Genesis in the bible, which talks about forbidden fruit. Edward has no right wanting Bella, yet he 'takes her' anyways. As he had mentioned in the book. It is unnatural for Vampires/Humans to be together, Bella is forbidden to Edward.. yet just like the Bible passage he takes the fruit. Just like if he does end up biting her.

Why do you think?

That makes perfect sense(:

It's like Edward took a 'bite' out of Bella. L0L!
that's a weird statement.

But yeah(: I couldn't agree more myself!

Stephenie answered the questions about the Twilight cover on her site and its pretty much exactly what you said Rachel! You think like Stephenie!

Here's what she said

"The apple on the cover of Twilight represents "forbidden fruit." I used the scripture from Genesis (located just after the table of contents) because I loved the phrase "the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil." Isn't this exactly what Bella ends up with? A working knowledge of what good is, and what evil is. The nice thing about the apple is it has so many symbolic roots. You've got the apple in Snow White, one bite and you're frozen forever in a state of not-quite-death... Then you have Paris and the golden apple in Greek mythology—look how much trouble that started. Apples are quite the versatile fruit. In the end, I love the beautiful simplicity of the picture. To me it says: choice."

I regret buying a paperback cover .. It's getting so messed up!
Maybe I'll buy a hardcover and keep both books to myself XD

I always thought that the quote and cover referred to Bella wanting more than she could have, and the consequences of that.

I love the symbolism. I find it interesting that the "forbidden fruit" could go for either Bella or Edward. Edward is the forbidden fruit for Bella, but it goes just as much for Edward. Not only should Edward stay away from eating Bella for lunch(or drinking I guess), but she is also forbidden because she is human and therefore should not be a love interest. Most of the symbolism in the books can go either way.

I think the Eclipse cover was really good though! How the ribbon was broken, but not really. Excellent-ay!

I love that the twilight cover is the apple (as discused in some episode and then in Twilight on page 19 it goes "As I watched, the small girl rose with her try - unopened soda, unbitten apple - and walked away with a quick, graceful...." blah blah blah.
I just love the incorperation of the unbitten apple into a simple look at the Cullens.

I've always thought that it was about temptation, as well.

Unfortunately for me, when I first bought Twilight it wasn't as big as it has become here in England, so I got my copy from the original UK publisher - Atom. And the cover sucks.

Spoiler:

Behind a spoiler so it doesn't stretch the page.

I'm considering buying a new copy with the apple cover, so my books all match. The book in the UK shops are now the same as the US covers.

I'm kinda thankful I never got that cover. I like the new ones a lot more. Shame we don't get them in hardback though.

Mine are hardback - I've bought all mine off amazon. My sister bought her friend a copy of Eclipse for Christmas from amazon, it arrived....and was signed by Stephenie! It took all my restraint not to swap that one for my (slightly dilapidated) copy!
